I want to know about your first ‘celebrity’ crush. You know, the one you fancied from that band, or that film, or who read the news, or who won Gold at the Olympics.
Did you have their pictures on your wall or in your locker?
Did you dress like them, style or colour your hair like them, follow them, meet them, marry them? (It could happen.)
Photos of THEM would be good, photos of YOU at the time you liked them would be even better.
Also, if you have time, I’d like to know whether they had any influence over your life, the person you became, or if they were just an embarrassing blip you would kind of rather forget about.
I had posters in my room of them - on the inside of my closet door and on a bulletin board mainly because my parents weren't crazy about me tacking stuff or taping it to my walls. I knew the words to all of their songs. I played them over and over and over on my record player (because yes, I am that old). And I stared at their photos and day dreamed for more hours than I care to admit of either one of them being the first boy I "made out" with.
I was nine years old when my crushes first began.
Here I am at my 11th birthday party opening my first poster of one of these guys. The girl on the far left was the one who gave me the poster (I hope I gave you a big thank you hug Angela!). She and the second girl on the left lived in my neighborhood. My younger brother is to the right of me. He looks a little too excited about my poster of a boy but he was only 10 so I'll excuse him.
The year was 1979. And apparently I thought overall shorts were cool. And we will not speak of the lamp or the hideous sofa in the background. It's really best that we not speak of them at all.
The guy on that poster? Why yes it's true. I'm 39 years old and I still have my vinyl records of my first celebrity crushes. And I have two 45's of the first one. Sadly, I no longer have any posters of them. And no, I do not have a record player to play them on. I also do not stare at their photos anymore and day dream about making out with them. Especially the second crush I'm going to admit to because he had lots of issues later in life. Please excuse the quality of the photos. I messed around forever with the lighting in my living room, my camera settings, etc., but I'm no pro so I did the best I could. I couldn't get rid of the horrible glare. If you look closely at the bottom, you may notice a little creature. I received a prize in the mail from the Nekkerd Lizards! It's my very own Nekked Lizard magnet and I couldn't be more pleased with it! Thanks Nekked Lizards!
And here are the two 45's:
Really y'all....what was not to love about Shaun Cassidy with his snazzy white painters hat, his snazzy white teeth and his snazzy feathered hair? The way he jauntily put his white painters hat a tiny bit askew to the side....be still my heart! I was so thrilled when he started on The Hardy Boys show because I could watch him in action instead of staring at a photo. Oh how I wanted my name to be Jill. Because he met her on a Monday and his heart stood still. Da doo ron ron indeed. You may want to invest in some ear plugs if you hit 'play' on this You Tube video.
Next up was this hawwwwwt guy:
Oh how I wanted to play with his cool hair. I spent hours thinking about playing with his cool hair. Doesn't he have cool hair?
This was the Leif Garrett I fell in love with:
Then something started happening to him and I just can't think about it because I want to go beat up that hussy Nicollette Sheridan for posing with my Leif like this. I don't know what's worse....her skimpy bikini or the fact that they posed on a couch so ugly with ruffled pillows. That is just not a cool enough setting for Leif to be posing in. And why is his hand on her hip like that? Who does she think she is?
Luckily, I grew up a little bit and promptly fell head over heels for this next guy for quite a few years. I spent every afternoon watching him as Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital. I wasn't supposed to watch TV after school so I would make a note of what channel the TV was on and what level the volume was at when I turned it on. Before I turned it back off I'd set it back to the channel and volume it was on and I never once got caught for watching Dr. Noah Drake and all of his General Hospital shenanigans after school when I was supposed to be doing boring stuff like homework. Now that I'm grown up I realize my parents probably never knew what channel and volume level they had left the TV on the night before. I also camped out overnight for tickets to his concert. I was amazed my parents allowed this. My older brother had to go chaperone me and my friends. But he just dropped us off and went somewhere for the night and came back for us the next morning. My parents still don't know about that. We managed to get fifth row seats and it was almost more than my poor little teen heart could take:
And naturally this led to me wanting to change my name to something else that started with the letter "J". Jessie.

Shaun seems to be the gentleman of the evening!
Thumbs up on Shaun C and Rick S. I never did like Leif, thought he was a little too cute. I can't believe that picture with him and Nicolette Sheridan. Wow, she's come a long way to being a desperate housewife, huh? Great post!!
I. LOVE. THIS.!!!! My sister had khaki jeans with Shaun Cassidy airbrushed at the bottom of one of the legs; and let me tell you, I COUNTED THE DAYS UNTIL SHE GREW OUT OF THEM SO I COULD WEAR THEM! Of course she was always the rail thin one of the 2 of us, so even when she passed them down to me, they were too long and I had to roll them a little; leaving not much else but his dreamy eyes staring out at people. :)

OMG...I had to run right over when my sister Jules e-mailed me about this post! (She knows I read your blog but wanted me to get over here in a jiffy!)
Leif G. did nothing for me but I'm totally with you on Shaun!
And for the record, Julie is 4 years and 11 months younger than me so it's only natural that she wouldn't remember this, but Shaun was not airbrushed; he was silkscreened. But they were khaki pants, and I had a pastel blue t-shirt and a pastel pink t-shirt to match, with Shaun silkscreened to those, too. They were from Sears!!! Mem...or...ies....
BTW, contest at my book blog this week! Stop on by!
Remembering Ruby
Way to Fun.
Flash back to the 70's
I think Shaun is top in the FUN MONDAY Poll. So your in some good company
Thanks for sharing
Wow. Nicolette Sheridan does not even look like the same person.
My sister has everyone of those albums and since her room was right next to mine - it was built that way, I had to listen to your idols - granted, I like Rick S. He had some nice tunes that I still like today - Affair of the Heart, Jesse's Girl, etc. And I noted a lizard there in a pic... Nice touch. :) NLM
I'm definitely with you on Rick. I saw him in concert three times...the first time was my first concert ever, the 2nd about a year or so after that and the last time was about 5 years ago on one of his newer tours. My sister and I both went and it was so much fun reliving our old crush.
I liked that Shaun Cassidy song, but was never a huge fan of his. I thought David was a hottie though.
And Leif Garrett? UGH! I never saw his appeal then or now.
oh honey, i am laughing my a$$ off!!!
this is awesome!
Shaun was a cutie patootie. Was it just me or was he doing the pee pee dance in that video??? Leif... well, I had a tee with him on it, but that was it. Now Rick... Hard to Hold... *SWOON* My first male nekkid booty in a movie, and I Liked it! LOL! I'm glad that I'm not the only one that had to keep their crushes in the closet! LOL!
Have a Fun Monday!
Hee hee, I remember that song but I never knew who sang it, da do run run run. Snort.
And I never heard of Rick Springfield but he was definitely cute.
Thanks for playing. I loved this. Have a brill day. :D
Leif Garrett was all over Teen Beat and Tiger Beat when I was young - and it always pissed me off. Less face time for David Cassidy!
No, no, no!!! But yes, yes, yes to Rick Springfield. HE is cute! (Do you know he's touring and will be down my way soon? I may just have to go see him!)
YEah! All 3 were great choices. I had no idea that Leif Garrett landed up that way. We are about the same age and I can so relate to the shorts, lamp and furniture!
aghh! I saw the lizards, but didn't even put it together with the one we sent you!! Duh! High altitude brain fog, for sure. ;)
I loved Leif. And Scott Baio. I think I'll have to try this one on my blog! This is a nice place you have here. I need to mark it so I can come back.
I'm beginning to see a pattern here.
That mug shot pic is SCCCAAARRRYYY.
Love the lizard. Be careful, knowing those Nekked Lizards, that one may come to life. They are a bit quirky.
I never liked Shaun (although I loved David) or Leif (too purty!), but who DIDN'T love Rick Springfield?
How cute ! Strange thing for me, I know the songs but didn't know who sang them, lol ! I heard them probably in the radio and never payed attention to the names ! There were not so many english songs in the radio most of them were in french. (I live in Belgium)
Did you know in the past year Dr. Noah Drake has been on GH again!
My Grandma was a HUGE GH fan. So I got to watch it every afternoon. Rick was good lookin'!! The other 2 were a lil before my time, but I could have fallen for Leif...lol!!
I seem to remember having a Shaun Cassidy 45 or two...but my heart REALLY belonged to the other Hardy Boy. Oh, Parker Stevenson...I'll never be embarrassed about my love for YOU. :)
Shaun seems to be the man of the moment.
Having watched the videos it's not surprising they had young heart fluttering!!
This has been such a fun Fun Monday to visit! I love that we all have a bit of nostalgia mixed with a healthy dose of shame. ;-)
Thanks for your kind words on my job situation...Atlanta sounds fun, but a bit of a long commute, or I'd take you up on your offer of an interview! ;-)
Oh my! Rick Springfield was the last rock concert I went to--still remember it--I too wanted to be Jessie. Something tells me Shaun is going to be apprearing on a lot of "crush" lists.
I just KNEW this week's theme would make me an 'old crotchety lady!!! LOL....these were all my Daughter's era.
Thanks for the visit today.
These Fun Monday posts are always a lot of fun. How do you get involved in the group?

Nope, I'll take his brother David any day!
ALL really good choices - back then!
Jennifer
You've got bling!
Lots of people have picked Shaun this week. For obvious reasons!!
You have fulfilled today's assignement masterfully including your 1979 picture, the celebrity pictures and the song clips. Shaun was very hot. I think that Rick Springfield still performs. Do mean to say that older convict-looking guy is Leif Garrett? Wow...
great post!!! My best friend loved Leif Garrett!
I have daughter's your age, I remember these crushes well. Great post.
I went to see a Rick Springfield concernt way back then and I don't think my hearings been the same since :) Great picks - I loved all of them also!!
Rick Springfield is still good looking!
I had totally forgotten about Leif! But yeah all my girlfriends loved him too.
I had one girlfriend in high school that had such a huge crush on Rick. She saw him in concert and then forever - every single day - wore the pins she had bought there. She was ate up!
Since I am a bit older than you, I was more interested in David Cassidy !
Rick Springfield YEAAAAAAAH!
He was everything! singer, actor, sexy pin up.
Did I say that?
OOHh what girl wasn't in love with them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was a great post! I had the same crushes, but add in Scott Baio. Oh....Leif....
Great post! You've inspired me to blog my own list of celebrity crushes...
